  • Chapter Playlists DO NOT work on burned Blu Ray disk

This is my first project with Encore so forgive me if I’m overlooking something obvious.

I created a Blu Ray project with 5 menus and 2 films.

    Main Menu for Film 1
    Scene Selection 1
    Scene Selection 2
    Scene Selection 3
    Menu for Film 2

There is a play button for both films and they work. All of the navigation from menu to menu works fine. On the scene selection pages, I want the user to choose a scene and play ONLY that scene. I created “Chapter Playlists” (similar to “Stories” in DVD Studio Pro). When I preview this is Encore everything works fine. On Scene Selection 2, I choose chapter 5 and chapter 5 plays and when it is done, it goes back to the menu and the button for chapter 6 is highlighted. That’s what it is supposed to do. My burned disk doesn’t do this. The play buttons and the navigation work exactly how they are supposed to. The issue I’m having is that when I click on any of the buttons for specific scenes, rather than play the video, it just goes to the next button. I can’t seem to find and answer to this anywhere.

Thank you. I saw that it says Blu Ray players do not support Chapter Playlists. Is that an issue with the Blu Ray Format or an issue in Encore?

I don’t know. It’s at least a limitation with Encore’s method of creating Chapter Playlists (doh!).

I can’t imagine that a BD author, using a BD authoring program that allowed scripting, would be prohibited from creating a script that supplied custom navigation between chapters.

Jon and/or Larry might have better info on this.

Regardless of whether this is an with BD or Encore, you would think they would give you some sort of warning when previewing the project or at the very very least disable that function when creating a BD.

I tried the Playlist option and while I am able to get the functionality I want with chapter selection, it doesn’t work with my film. The jumps from track to track aren’t seamless.

Chapter Playlists do not work for Blu-ray projects in Encore. This is a limitation of Encore and not the Blu-ray spec. In fact, with a little modifying of the Blu-ray image that Encore generates using a free program called BDedit, you could probably make it work the way you want. This would require knowing a good deal about spec level Blu-ray authoring though.

Regular playlists do work for Blu-ray projects, though as you discovered, they are not seamless. Again, this is a limitation of Encore and not the BD spec. You could make your own playlist using BDedit, and have them seamlessly connected using the connection condition value of 5.

In my opinion Adobe has really lost touch with the community in regards to authoring, and haven’t fixed many of the Encore problems. What’s sad is that Encore is probably the best non-professional authoring application available. Maybe the lack of competition is making them lazy? Who knows.
