I’m creating a project in Encore but am building the menus in Photoshop. They need to be widescreen menus, and my source video is 720×576. But I am unsure whether I should create my menus PAL D1/DV Widescreen (720×576) or PAL D1/DV Widescreen Square Pixel (1024×576)?

What should it be, and what difference will it make? I do plan on putting some video into one of the menus, via After Effects, in the background, so i’m not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance.

As long as you use a PAR of 1.422, the PAL D1/DV Widescreen 720×576 setting is appropriate.

The square pixel dimensions should be used when the menu will be manipulated in any program that doesn’t understand rectangular pixels. AE and En both understand rectangular pixels.

Thanks. The default PAR for the PAL D1/DV Widescreen 720×576 setting is 1.46. There is no 1.422 setting available in the drop down PAR box. Or is that what you meant, as this is the closest?

[Jason Cork] “The default PAR for the PAL D1/DV Widescreen 720×576 setting is 1.46”

You must be using CS4. For CS4, Adobe brought all of the PAR values in all of its applications in line with the BBC standard. 1.422 was used in earlier versions, 1.4587, or 1.46, is used now.
