How to create abstract, swirling smoke particles?
Posted by Steve Simon on February 1, 2012 at 5:56 pmHello,
Does anyone know what effect / software is used to create this? Can it it be done in After Effects? It’s sort of a swirling blue smoke like particle system.
Example from the “Art Beats” page. Link:

Thanks!

February 1, 2012 at 9:24 pmYou can do some of those effect using expressions/masks etc.
But by far the best particle systems for After Effects are Trapcode Particular, and also related, Trapcode Form and 3D stroke. You can get them all in the suite:

And here is a collection of tutorials on Trapcode, with lots of examples similar to what you were asking about:

February 1, 2012 at 11:29 pmThe old AE Flame plugin would be ideal and really quick to setup. You’ll have to google to see if it’s still available. Otherwise, Fractal Noise may be an option as well as those mentioned in the other post.

Thanks for the response. I’ve been trying to figure this out using Paticular / Trapcode Form combined with a blur filter (vector blur / gaussian blur, etc.). The results were ok, maybe I have to spend a little more time with it.
It seems like Maya’s fluid system might be a good way to go.
