Downloading EX3 footage from Mac and change to PC platform?
If I download EX3 footage onto an external hard drive connected to a MAC, would I be able to transfer the footage to a PC platform?

Mac and PC use different hard drive formatting. If you get a program such as Paragon software’s ‘NTFS For Mac’ you’ll be able to connect a PC formatted drive to your Mac and transfer the BPAV folders from the XDCAM EX footage over. Then those folders will be importable by any Windows-based NLE.

As I eluded to in my first post, you must first decide what format you want to use for your ‘go-between’ hard drive, in other words the one you’re using to transfer media between platforms. Once you’ve figured that out you either need mac software (for your Mac) that can read and write to a NTFS formatted drive OR you need PC software (for your PC) that will read and write to a Mac formatted hard drive.
The latest versions of Mac OS X will read an NTFS formatted drive with no third party software needed but cannot write to it. The 2 above described options are generally accepted as the most reliable methods of transferring media between platforms.

You need to understand how this footage is recorded on SxS card and managed on each platform/NLE.
Without that basic knowledge you wont be able to understand the solutions available for your intended workflow.

There’s been much good talk about hard drives but I thought I’d clearly recommend:
BPAV folder is your camera master and you want to back that up. That should be the source to wrap to MOV for FCP, wrap to MXF for Avid, MP4 for those NLEs that use it.
If you wrap to either MOV or MXF and save only that you would be creating unnecessary work and potential problems.
Others have noted but I’d thought I’d also state clearly.
Macs can read FAT32 and NTFS hard drives.
Macs can write to FAT32 hard drives. Macs need additional software to write to NTFS hard drives.Windows may need additional software to read HFS Plus (drives formatted for Mac).

Save your BPAV folder and then you can use it on any platform. If you convert it to use in Final Cut, that converted footage will only be able to be used in Final Cut.
You should always keep the BPAV footage as is for later retrieval.
I have both platforms and have had to deal with cross-platform editing. I have installed the “Mac Drive” software on my PC, which allows me to read my Mac formated drive on either computer. You can get a free 30 day trial. It only cost’s around $30.

I am doing a TV work in a XDCAM X3 and edit all my program in FCP, when I have to deliver it to my cient
( he is in charge of the final editing) we realized that he work in Avid. What can I do, so my project can be read in his Media Composer 5? -
You really need to speak to the Avid editor because what he can handle may not be the same as best codec to use in an already established or underway workflow.
These days Apple ProRes decode is cross platform.
FCP can export to EX MP4 which can in turn be wrapped to .mxfThe Avid editor should tell you (assuming s/he really knows the system . . . there are some very technically incompetent “editors” out there.) rather than you saddling the editor with your decision.
