  • Sony EX3: how do I record uncompressed video

I’m shooting a music video on a lot of green screen. I’m thinking of renting the Sony EX3 for the job. I’ve read that it’s far better to record the video in uncompressed HD, in this case, than to record on the SxS cards and convert the video afterward.

    Is this true?

And what is the best way to go about recording uncompressed HD. I have a mac pro and would have to rent additional gear.

    Hi Louis,
Once you have compressed something you can not revert it to “uncompress’.
Yes you can transcode it to an Uncompress codec, but the information that you lost in the beginning won’t be recovered.
To record uncompress from the EX-3 is possible but you need a Mac Pro with a KONA3 and a very fast RAID system, or one of the dedicated Uncompress recorders that there are in the market (https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/142/869410).
This workflow is complicated, expensive and unnecessary.
Your best option is to rent a NANO-Flash or an AJA Ki-Pro. You will record with a quality indistinguishable from Uncompress but generating files much smaller. This workflow is easy and affordable. You will also have a mobility impossible to get with 10b Uncompress.
    Best,
    Rafael

The Nanoflash and Ki-Pro are both capable, but designed for portability, especially the nano, but a more affordable option would be this device:

In addition, it gives you eight or more channels of audio. You will also need timecode to sync music playback. I use a Sound Devices 744T, but there are a few other, more affordable options as well.

    Mac Pro 2×2.8 Quadcore – 10.6.2 – QT 7.6.3 – 22 GB RAM – nvidia8800GT – SATA internal & external storage – Blackmagic Multibridge Pro – Open GL 1.5.10 – Wacom Intous2 tablet – AJA io
SONY XDCAM EX3 – Letus Elite

    Agree.
If you go to work in an civilized environment, the MOTU or the Matrox are the most affordable option
