My company is looking to upgrade my Mac and is considering the Mac Mini with Lion Server vs the Mac Pro. Lately we’ve been doing alot of After Effects and Premiere work (1080p) and when rendering (currently on a MacBook Pro) I’m unable to work on anything else and render times are between 2-3 hours for a 3-4 minute piece (with effects). They are looking to save money so my question is would I be able to the Mac Mini be a viable option? The specs are below.

    2.0GHz : Dual 500GB
    2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    4GB memory
    Dual 500GB 7200-rpm hard drives1
    Intel HD Graphics 3000
    OS X Lion Server
    OS X Lion

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

here’s a page with benchmarks for various macs and various ‘pro’ apps. towards the bottom is a after effects benchmark.

my personal feeling would be since you are also editing in premiere, getting a macpro with a
mercury playback capable video card would be your best bet.

i think an imac with a lot of ram (it can hold up to 32gb) would be better than a mini.
