Having upgraded to EX1s, I was just wondering if there’s an alternative to buying the 521EX remote so we can use them with our fig-rig. We already have the remote control for our PD170s – is there an ‘adapter’ that can convert the PD170 remote plug so you can use it in an EX1, or do we have to shell out another 150quid for the EX1 remote?

    Hi Steve,

Cameras like the PD170 use the LANC protocol for their remote controllers whereas the EX series cameras do not. Even if you were able to marry an EX lens controller cable to your existing LANC piece there wouldn’t be proper communication.

Probably the least expensive controller for the stock EX lens is the Libec ZC-9EX and can be viewed here:

Click on “Other Accessory” on the lower right side of the web page. The Libec piece has record start/stop, zoom and last clip review functions.

These Libec zoom controls are good, however the extension cables are very expensive. A 7′ extension is over $100 and they don’t lock together so you will need to tape them. I spoke directly to Libec in Torrance Ca about the connector as it has threads on one side but it is missing the locking nut on the other. Perhaps someone here can recommend another source for these 8 pin cables?

    Good Luck
