I am considering purchasing the Sony Ex-1. I am using Final Cut and a Mac G-5, PowerPC. However, I just read in the literature that you must have an Intel-core system. Will the file transfer from the camera not work with a PowerPC G-5? Does this mean I need to purchase another Intel-based G-5 to be able to work with this camera? Has anyone else faced this issue?

    Thanks for your input.

[brian cass] “Will the file transfer from the camera not work with a PowerPC G-5?”

Yes it will work. The SxS Pro sony software driver is Universaal Binary as is the Sony Transfer Tool software. The only thing you can’t use on the G5 is the Sony Clip Browser software, which is Intel only.

Thank you. That is a relief. To clarify, I can export the files over to my hard drive and then put them into Final Cut to view them?

Sure, as long as you follow these steps first:

    1) Install FAM driver and Transfer Tool Software.
    2) Connect EX to G5 via USB
    3) Launch Transfer Tool – import clips from camera to a hard drive you choose in Transfer Tool
preferences. The clips will import, then will be “unwrapped” and converted to the QT .mov
    file format.
    4) You can use the Transfer Tool Software as a standalone app or from within FCP 6.0.2. Only
after the Transfer Tool import will FCP be able to “see” the clips.

I just shot a three week job for a guy with an EX-1 and he wants to buy a used Mac G-4 laptop with Avid Express HD to edit at home.

Will this work? If so, exactly which Avid version will he need?

    Hi Steve,
I just made a google-avid-ex-1, and it seems that can only work as HDV.

    Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
    G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
    PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

Is it possible to do a Firmware Update to 1.2 for the EX-1 on a Power PC G5?
