We running FCP 5.1.2 and editing on an XDCAm 25 CBR timeline, we’re wondering if we have it set correctly becuase the conforming times are huge. Will this be worse with the 35VBR setting? Is there something we can do to streamline this.

We have Kona 2 cards but love the fact that we can use the transfer software and not digitize for days. But on the back end when we’re always in a hurry the conforming is brutal.

We havn’t tried putting it back to disk yet via our Sony F30 but I’m guessing the conforming still needs to be done

Any info or short cuts would be greatly appreciated!

    thanks

The “conform” process has to happen if you’re writing an MPEG stream back to an MPEG device. That’s HDV tape or XDCAM disc.

If you need to layoff to HDCAM, Digibeta, BetaSP, etc, then all you do is “Edit To Tape”. That’s just a render, then.

So just select edit to tape or render the timeline prior to selecting it, we tried the render to tape and seems like it still goes thru the conform process

    Thanks we’ll try it again

The question is, what tape format you laying off to?

So exactly what is the difference between ‘conform’ and ‘render’ is it just that an mpeg stream is involved?

Yes, FCP still needs to conform the edits, which takes some time, but FCP shouldn’t have to render the whole sequence.

Best to upgrade to XDCAM Transfer Version 1.1 though if you haven’t done already, as it is faster all round, including for export.

We’re on 1.1 XDCAM xfer software, that’s interesting I didn’t realize the xfer software would have to do with the conforming issue.

Nate to answer your question, one version needs to go to tape thru the Kona 2 card, downconverted to SD letterbox onto a digibeta, another version (HD. XD cam native) is going back to the XD cam HD deck, the F 30 via firewire in FAM mode.

Is the settings that are making the Kona 2 display video to a monitor and allowing us to go back to tape effecting the conform issue?

    Thanks for your help
