    When I draw a new text box, it automatically makes it into 3-column and with a text wrap applied to the box. I can’t find any way to undo this default, and I never set it in the first place. There’s nothing in EDIT>PREFERENCES that seems to relate to this.

    That’s pretty wild. Sounds like an April Fool’s joke. Check your Default Paragraph style. Other than that, ask your mischievous friend how to fix it.
