    i outline masked the person with pen tool and is having trouble editing that person with out changing the background. how can i edit him with out changing my background.

    andru, you’ll need to be more specific. When you create a closed mask anything outside the mask will disappear. Is that what’s happening? In that case, make a copy of your layer and put it underneath the masked layer.

    If that isn’t the problem, maybe you could post a screenshot, or give more details on what you’re doing.

    Edit him in what way? Editing the mask shape or adding adjustment effects to your actor?

    i made a mask of a charater and when I try to add an effect to him, the whole shot changes with him. how do I edit the inside of the mask with out changing the whole shot.

    The basic technique would look as follows:

    TOP LAYER: Footage of your masked character — masks and effects on this layer

    BOTTOM LAYER: Footage of your background (possibly identical footage, but without the masks and effects)

    This should get the job done, assuming your masks have been set up correctly (they need to be “closed” masks; they have the correct blend modes, etc — you can check this by looking at the masked layer only and making sure things are cut out how you want them).
