  Changing settings on the Hyperdeck Shuttle

  Hi all,

  I have the Hyperdeck Shuttle recorder for my Panasonic AF101 and there seems to be very little information about the mechanics of how it works.

  I recorded some clips in a test, recording 1080p at 23.976fps to both the recorder and SD card. I also did some variable frame rate stuff.

  I wasn’t expecting the VFR to record to the hyperdeck as it did to the SD cards (and it didn’t) but when checking the footage from the Hyperdeck I see it is all listed as being 29.976fps, as opposed to the 24p stuff on the cards.

  I see on the Blackmagic site it says the deck supports 720p50, 720p59.94, 720p60, 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 1080i60, 1080PsF23.98, 1080PsF24, 1080PsF25, 1080PsF29.97, 1080PsF30, 1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p29.97, 1080p30.

  How does one get it to record in any of those modes?

  Hi Ben,

  The HyperDeck Shuttle automatically detects the incoming video signal, and will capture into the same format that it is receiving. It doesn’t have any internal conversion that would allow capturing into a different format than the one it recieves. The only way to change the capture format would be to change the output format on the source device.

  That does lead me to another question though – Namely in which case why was my 23.976fps footage recorded on the sd-card and camera settings recorded as 29.976 on the Hyperdeck?

  It seems pretty common for cameras that record into 24p to output 1080i59.94 on their outputs. I know that the Canon 5D will do the same.

  I can only really speculate that this is for the sake of compatibility. 1080p24/23.98 is not a universally supported HD format. There’s plenty of devices out there that don’t support it, but most, if not all should support 1080i59.94.

  In certain cases, the 60i output is a container for 24fps with pulldown. You may be able to remove the pulldown to get back to the original 24/23.976 framerate in your NLE.

  I’m using Premiere CS5.5. Is that something one could do via the interpret footage function?

  If AE can do it, I suspect PP can do it. Give it a go.
