I can’t get realtime HDTV preview in AE CS3 with this card.!? It only works using DV PAL/ NTSC. Even previewing a simple still picture wont get me realtime. HDTV 720 x 1280 = gives me 21 frms and 1080 x 1920 = 10 frms… Why.!? As soon as I turn off video preview in AE preference, then I get realtime preview. But it won’t work when watching the preview through HDMI connection to my reference monitor (Sony HD TV). Whats the point to sell a HDTV card when it ain’t works to preview HD.!? Can anyone enlighten me, please!

    My set up: Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz, 10 GB Ram, Raid 1 TB, OS 10.5.2, QT 7.4.5, Intensity 1.8.4, AECS3 8.0.2

That sounds about right. Our boards don’t actually accelerate the processing done by After Effects. Faster CPU’s and more RAM can improve this.

This is a limitation in way frames have to be passed back and forth to our board from the app. We are looking into a way to improve this, but nothing is set in stone.

The reason you see realtime in software mode is that the application does not have to send any frame out to hardware and so only needs to generate the preview image. Doing a full framerate full resolution output requires a bit more. In this case it is enough to do SD, but HD is a bit larger and therefore slower.

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but hopefully the knowledge was helpful.

“Faster CPU’s and more RAM can improve this”… Keh, I got the newest Mac Pro 3.0 MHz, 10 GB of ram, 1TB Raid. How much more speedier set up can you get today.!? It’s a bummer that you can’t get full HD preview on your TV monitor. I bought the card just for that reason. To be able to see my broadcast work through HDMI just as the viewer at home sees it.

    Yup…I completely understand.

I certainly wasn’t speaking poorly of your system…far from it. Just saying that with the current implementation, more power is the key.

Again…we are looking for ways to make this better.

I work with After Effects at work and home. At work we have a PC fully loaded with an AJA capturing card and I get the exact same problem. (working SD at work) I can preview real time on my PC monitor but if I turn on the AJA previewing settings, half of the time I get 20-25 fps playback rather than 29.97. And Audio is all out of sync. I just purchased the Intensity card for my home system. (Dual AMD Opterons x2 core) because I’m getting more HD projects in my freelance jobs so I wanted to be able to preview on my Sony HDTV. I’m sad to hear that I most likely will run into the same problems you have.
