  • Multibridge Eclipse – Problems with analogue video & chroma levels

    Hi,

I finally recieved my Multibridge Eclipse last week (to replace an AJA-IO), and I’ve been having some trouble calibrating the video and chroma levels.

I noticed that the video on the analogue inputs (composite or component) looked crushed in the highlights. After much messing about I’ve isolated the problem to the Eclipse.

It seems that the analogue input video level is too high, as everything above ~85% is actually registering as 100%, and anything above is crushed.

I figured I could easily tweak this in the Decklink preferences panel … but then things got a little weird!

It turns out that Video Level fader and Chroma Level fader (in the Decklink preferences) are swapped. The Video level fader seems to adjust the chroma, and the chroma fader affects the video level.

While the fix for this seems simple … just tweak the appropriate fader … I’m not convinced it’s affecting the video/chroma levels in the correct manner. When working with the YUV/component input, the “video level” fader has no affect at all, which prevents me from making any chroma adjustments.

I could live with this bug if the input levels were OK, but I have a feeling that the two problems (initial levels and fader problems) may be related.

The problem existed out of the box, and also after installing DeckLink 6.5.1 (which updated the unit’s firmware).

SDI and HDMI inputs are unaffected by the problem.

I’m still waiting for a response from Blackmagic, but wondered if anyone else has noticed this problem with their Eclipse units?

(PS: The Eclipse is attached to a QuadG5 running FCS2)

Just a quick note: Blackmagic have posted Decklink v6.6 today.

I’ve installed it, and it appears to have fixed the reversed/inactive level faders issue. I can now calibrate the input video and chroma levels correctly.

Set to their default levels, I’m still getting very high video and chroma levels, but at least I can correct this now. I’ll run some ramp tests to make sure no highlight details are being lost, but everything looks good so far.

Also – this is a minor issue – but has anyone had any success setting the LED meters to “Stereo Spectrum Analyzer”? Changing the setting doesn’t seem to make any difference on the Mac. In the default 16-channel meter mode, I don’t seem to get anything appearing on the lower set of input meters. They work fine when I run the Eclipse as a standalone converter, but not when I’m working with FCP. Just thought I’d ask here before mentioning it to BM.

    Regards,

    Oli.
