  Decklink capture problem

  I am using a Decklink HD Pro with a Mac G5.
  I am capturing with Blackmagic Deck Control, set to
  Blackmagic NTSC 10 bit. Footage is standard def, 30 fps.

  When I capture a NTSC clip (about 30 seconds long), the audio on the clip is either out of sync or it stutters in places. The video stops and starts in the Deck Control window during capture, but looks fine when I play it afterwards. I installed the newest Blackmagic software (version 6.1) and ran Disk Speed Test. It said my disk read and write were over 200 MB/sec and the NTSC frame rate was over 300. I have had this card for a couple of years, but this problem just began recently.

  Any ideas what I should check next?

  Hi Keith,

  We have noticed a problem similar to yours after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.9 which does not occur with Mac OS X 10.4.8 and below. This problem is currently being investigated and it is hoped it will be resolved in the DeckLink 6.2 drivers.

  You mentioned that your problem is seen in NTSC whereas we have only seen this problem in high definition so this might or might not be the same problem.

  Are you running Mac OS X 10.4.9?

  Yes, I am using OSX 10.4.9. Now when I try to capture HD, I get a dropped frames error after about 10 seconds of capturing. I have captured HD footage before without any problems.

  Hi Keith,

  The problem we’ve observed only occurs in Blackmagic Deck Control and does not affect Final Cut Pro? Can you test a capture with Final Cut Pro and see if the problem still occurs?

  I can’t capture Blackmagic 10 bit, (there is no picture, usually crashes FCP when selected) but Blackmagic 8 bit seems to work.

  Hi Keith,

  Can you please email the crash log for Final Cut Pro after selecting 10-bit to support@ blackmagic-design.com. This might provide us with a clue as to the problem you have observed.

  What kind of disk array are you using? How many disks are in it and which RAID level do you use? How does it connect to your G5?

  I am using a RAID from HUGE Systems, the disk utility says “ATA U320 RAID0.” Does that help?

  It is connected to a ATTO Express PCI UL4D card in my Mac, with 2 SCSI cables.
