down conversion Decklink HD Studio
Posted by Alfred Guzzetti on May 7, 2007 at 2:57 pmDoes the Decklink HD Studio produce a good-quality image when down-converting 1080i to SD? Is it comparable to the quality produced by Sony decks such as the HVR-M25U when down-converting HDV material?
Also, can the card output the down-converted signal as S-video (or composite)?

May 8, 2007 at 2:04 amHi Alfred,
The DeckLink HD Studio is no longer available and has been replaced by the Intensity Pro which has much the same features but at a much lower cost (US$349). The Intensity Pro is scheduled to ship this month so you should see it in stores towards the end of the month.
The Intensity 1.4 drivers will be released at the same time that Intensity Pro ships. These drivers support both models of Intensity cards and also include down conversion. When you play back high defintion material through the Intensity Pro, and you have down conversion enabled, you will see simultaneous output of SD on both the HDMI and analog outputs of the Intensity Pro card. You can choose to switch the analog outputs of the Intensity Pro between component, S-video and composite analog video. If you are outputting S-video and need to connect to an S-video connector (rather than to two seperate Y/C connectors), then you will need to attach an inexpensive dual-RCA to S-video cable which can cost as little as $7. Please see the related support note How do I connect S-Video hardware to Intensity Pro?.

This is very good news. Thank you. Can you comment on the second part of my question, which was about the quality of the down-converted image?

May 9, 2007 at 3:03 amHi Alfred,
If you were at NAB, you have probably already seen the awesome quality of the component analog output of the Intensity Pro connected to a Sony BVM 26″ monitor. I expect the down conversion to be very good but we’ll also run some comparison tests with the Sony deck to see how they compare. We’ve got a very full testing schedule leading up to the release of the card but hopefully we’ll be able to squeeze in this additional test too. Thanks for the suggestion as it is a good one that we should do internally to make sure that the down converted quality is as expected.
