FCP quits when I try to duplicate or edit the Blackmagic capture setting (to create an anamorphic version of the setting). I reinstalled the driver and trashed the FCP prefs but that didn’t work. Anybody a clue what is going on & how to solve it?

    Hi Jaap,

I haven’t been able to reproduce that problem. Please uninstall the DeckLink drivers. Then launch Final Cut Pro and edit one the standard Apple capture settings and try to make it anamorphic. Does Final Cut Pro still crash or does the problem no longer occur?

Then it still crashes, Luke. Let me add that it only happens with all non-HDTV settings of Blackmagic (I can’t edit the setting, it quits before I get there), and that FCP recently also quits on open, sometimes 5 or 10 times in a row, and then mysteriously starts working as if nothing happened.

PS: Luke, I tried if I could get BM Deckcontrol to crash, but without success; then back to FCP I could duplicate and edit a BM setting, but only once; next time it crashed like before. I know it sounds irrational, but there it is.

Could it have anything to do with my having installed (and removed) Avid Media Composer and an extra FW card for its Mojo recently?

    Hi Jaap,

If I’ve understood you correctly, the crash still occurs even if you uninstall the DeckLink drivers and try editing one of the Apple capture settings to make it anamorphic. Is that correct? If so, then the problem has no link to the DeckLink drivers.

Given that your copy of Final Cut Pro is regularly crashing during launch, and also frequently crashes when you edit capture settings, I believe your copy of Final Cut Pro may be corrupt. At the very least, I would recommend deleting Final Cut Pro and then reinstalling Final Cut Pro 5.1, run the update to v5.1.2 but avoid installing the DeckLink drivers. Check to see if the crashing problem has gone away. If Final Cut Pro appears to be working without crashing, install the DecekLink drivers and then see if you can reproduce the crash. If reinstalling Final Cut Pro does not help, then you might have to consider reinstalling Mac OS X 10.4.8, QuickTime 7.1.3, Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 and DeckLink 5.7.2 but hopefully you won’t need to do this. I would also recommend you use Disk Utility (or Alsoft DiskWarrior 3.0.3) to verify your hard disk and check it for any directory structure corruption. If problems are found, you will either need to repair them or reformat your disk before reinstalling any software.

Please let me know how you go.

    Hi Jaap,

It’s hard to know if Avid software and installation of the Firewire card could have had an impact on Final Cut Pro. I doubt they would have any direct impact on Final Cut Pro but if the software installed on your Mac was already in an unstable condition, then installing and removing the Avid software might have aggravated the problem so that other software misbehaved and the problems just happend to shop up in Final Cut Pro. However this is really just unfounded speculation so the best bet would be to start by verifying your hard disk with Apple’s Disk Utility or Alsoft DiskWarrior 3.0.3 and then delete and reinstall Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 and see if stability returns.

Sorry Luke, you got me wrong – I uninstalled the BM drivers, then reinstalled them and then get FCP to crash when trying to enter any of the BM capture settings that relate to SD codecs – the PAL setting, the NTSC setting etc.
It quits after pressing “Edit…” or “Duplicate…” and before the capture settings window pops up; and it takes a few seconds.

It doesn’t crash when I try the same with the BM HDTV settings or the native Apple settings.

Still sure it has nothing to do with the BM drivers?

    Hi Jaap,

Thanks for clarifying that. Please uninstall the DeckLink drivers and leave them uninstalled. Then launch Final Cut Pro and edit one the standard Apple capture settings and try to make it anamorphic. Does Final Cut Pro still crash or does the problem no longer occur? Once you have finished testing, you can reinstall the DeckLink drivers. I won’t be sure that the DeckLink drivers can be ruled out as part of the problem until you have conducted this test with the DeckLink drivers removed.

Sorry for this very late reply, Luke; but I was on a holiday for a few days.
I tested as you said without the Decklink drivers and then there were no crashes – however as it remained difficult to open FCP I decided to reinstall MacOS, FCP and the Decklink drivers all together and now the problem seems gone.
It is impossible to define what exactly caused the problem, but my guess is that there is something in the Avid’s Mojo driver that may have conflicted somwhere with Decklink’s SD drivers – at least the fact that the problem was restricted to the PAL and NTSC capture settings of Blackmagic within FCP points in that direction. I’d be happy to know your thoughts on this.
