    Hi,

We have a number of short (10min) productions which were shot on 4,2,2 D9 broadcast tape. These were originally transferred to DV format for edit and then output to DVD for presentation.

If we re-edit these uncompressed 10 bit SDI using our decklink SD Extreme and PPro 2, can we display them at a significantly better quality using a High Definition LCD or Plasma display, or will the scaling involved degrade any improvement along the way?

Any advice or observations would be much appreciated.

    Geoff Grtside.

There is no doubt that edited 10bit uncompressed viewed directly on a good LCD or plasma display will look superior to DV encoded to MPEG2 for a DVD video, especially the graphics and images with fine detail. If you are asking whether 10bit uncompressed will yield a better looking DVD, the answer is yes, but the results won’t be extremely dramatic, just sharper and clearer. The better the scaler in the TV or DVD player the more difference you will see.

    Hi David,

    Thanks for the interest.

What I would like to do is find the best way of outputing from premiere to a high quality player like the Pixel Magic Media Box. What I’m not sure though is how to provide such a device with the correct file type, and if I can achieve this, then what the final quality will be.

To phrase it another way: What would be the best solid state means of recording a premiere file to playback onto a HD display, and will it be better than a DVD player?

Perhaps I,m trying to make a silk purse from a sows ear!

    Best regards,

    Geoff.

Perhaps a high-def Windows Media 9 file: JVC makes an inexpensive (US$300) DVD player which supposedly will display HD from such a file via a standard DVD-ROM.

sorry I don’t have more details,
    Jeff

    Thanks Jeff,

    I’ll investigate.

    Cheers,

    Geoff.
