a8n-32 sli what graphics card works
Hi
We have been struggling with a asus x1900xt graphics card ….works perfect(without the multibridge) but we can’t get it to work properly with the multibridge extreme. We can’t get video desktop. When we go into windows display settings we get blank settings so we cant adjust screensize. A warning says that he driver for the graphics card says it was designed for an earlier version of windows(even though it is the latest driver). So we figure we will try an nvidia 7800 graohics card. Anyone tried this combo?Thanks

I have made several posts about this motherboard on this forum. It does not work well with MB Extreme, as do none of the SLI motherboards we have tested, and beleive me we have done a bunch. Were it me, I would cut my loses and move on to some other solution. The Nvidia chipset will not reallocate resources to the PCIexpress bus for this device with a coexistant PCIe graphics card. You could make it work with a PCI graphics card and leave nothing else on the PCI express slots. That was about the only we were able to get it working. If somebody has a good solution to this problem, I would love to hear it.GC

ouch…..! Ok that explains why every graphics card we put in it does exactly the same thing.( major graphics incompatability) Thanks for clearing that up. I looked all over this forum for info on this motherboard…. were your posts longer than 4 months old?So what did you end up doing?
Is there any motherboards you could recomend that could take our amd4800+ cpu and the multibridge(4lane pci-e)? I guess the graphics performance in after effects would suffer using a “pci” graphics card. So is it just sli boards or is it pci express graphics cards?
Sorry about all the questions but tech support don’t seem to think there should be an issue with our setup.

I just read your other posts about the a8n32 ….I tracked them down.Hey it was cool hearing your thoughts about the adobe video suite being great, we thought it had come ahead leaps and bounds from previous versions as well!
So if we rip out and send back the pci-express graphics card and put in a regular pci graphics card would you have any recomendation of any pci models? I dont think you can get an ati x series or nvideo nvs series in regular pci. Also would the onboard sata(nvidia) still be fine to use as we are getting about 210mb/sec out of it which was better than we had imagened.
The multibridge was playing back in premier/ae/combustion fine it just said the “graphics adaptor drivers were designed for an earlier version of xp” message when we went into the graphics settings.
I guess we cant put our 4800+ cpu in a k8we…Right?

I typically do not make exact component recomendations, because of the boomerang effect they invaribly have.
My reference to the K8WE is the first time I have done so. My prior posts were to discourage forum users from going with the SLI boards. I just checked the decklink site, and they are still showing the A8N-SLI32 deluxe as an acceptible board. It performs well in every way including the SATA raid as you have observed (which by the way performs better than the K8WE). These questions may be better addressed by BM than by me, as they are still showing this combo as working. They may have an exact set of peripherials that work. I just know we put a lot of money into it and other SLI boards trying to use the AMD 4800 when we discovered that all boards with this chipset suffer from the same inability to delegate resources to other peripherials on the bus, including PCI devices, with other hardware including PCI graphic cards. I wish I had a better answer for you. -

Yes tech support have been great but they dont seem to have ever heard of this problem. I asked them to recommend a more reliable graphics card than the asus x1900xt9 (that we have) and they said that it was fully supported. Maybe when they tested the a8n32 for compatability they were using the pci-e decklink dh and not the multibridge extreme, maybe they are a lot different even though they both connect into the 4lane pcie slot.Our computer is at the computer shop that built it at the moment maybe we should try a regular pci graphics card tomorrow and see what that is like.
The k8we with 254 processors and ram worked out to cost more than a quad g5 with 4gb ram. We have never been mac users but it sounds to us like it would be cheaper to buy a new g5. Especially if the k8we onboard raid performance needs to be beafed up externally. which is another reason why we thought we would stay pc.
Did you ever have any other success with other chipsets on other motherboards?

Did you ever check out the asus A8n-e it has no sli ,still has nvidia nforce4 chipset. Looks like its the same as the a8n32 but with out the sli bit.

For the moment I am using a Multibridge Extreme on an Asus AN832SLI Deluxe with an AMDX2 3800+ and an ATI X1900XTX. I had to place my ATI X1900XTX in the first PCIEx16 slot and put the Multibridge beside it in the PCIEx4 slot. Fortunately the hardware although under spec has met my needs for capture (HD via component and Digibeta via SDI). This system spec is not good enough for HD editing.
If I was planning on editing HD I would want dual core Opterons and external RAID storage connected to a PCI-X host bus adaptor.
Maybe I’d choose a Quadro over an ATI card because I would imagine the drivers are more stable for workstation use.
Since you mentioned using another motherboard, I will mention this. Initially I tried using an Asus AN8-SLI Premium motherboard that was lying around and it did not work at all. The Multibridge was not being detected in windows.
