  Clone an HDCAM tape ??

  Assuming that I’m running a Decklink HD Pro (single link) card, Dual 2.7 G5, ProMax Sata Raid, and have one HD deck available
  (HDW-250), is it possible to CLONE a tape…..or will the capture and subsequent output (assuming I’ve done nothing else to the video)
  cause an additional decompress/compress cycle to occur ? (Using HD-SDI both directions of course)

  Seems like I remember from back in my DVCAM days that Final Cut was smart enough to know not to recompress when outputting DV
  back to a deck. I’m unclear as to whether it would be the same with HD when using the HDW-250 and Sony’s HDCAM compression.

  Anybody ???

  Sony chooses to only allow the HDCam codec to be transferred natively using tape to tape transfers, or on their own editing system called xpri.

  So, I suppose the same would hold true for HD-SR captured and then output back to an SRW-1 with a dual link Blackmagc Card ?

  It is more like coping digi beta – it does employ some compression done in the machine hardware but generation test are OK after 10 or so copies.

  Yes absolutely. It’s a very low amount of compression, so it will be visually lossless after many generations. It’s not like DV where the compression is so high, one generation of re-encoding takes a big hit.
