Saturation Mask
Posted by Daniel Schmidt on July 5, 2011 at 11:56 amHow can I create a saturation mask in AE so that my color correction affects only the least saturated areas of the video?

July 5, 2011 at 12:20 pmyou can probably create a matte with the channel combiner effect. set from staturation to luminance only and click the invert option.
that should give you a grayscale matte that you could use as a track matte for an adjustment layer to effect saturation for the layers bellow it.
you could further adjust the matte layer with levels or curves if needed.

July 6, 2011 at 6:48 pmUnfortunately the channel combiner effect seems to not work properly in 16 bit.

July 7, 2011 at 1:10 pmyou can use hdr compander to get have lower bpc effects to work in higher bpc projects.
i’m not at an ae machine right now, but you might also look at some of the other chennel effects to see if some of those can separate the saturation in some way (many, if not most of the channel effects are 16-32 bpc).
