Freeform Pro for AE
Posted by Eric Kirk on June 7, 2011 at 5:11 pmHello,
I figure this is the best place to post my question but I am considering purchasing this Freeform Pro and while I see some odds and ends out there (tutorials, examples), I don’t see like a promo video that describes all of the capability.
The website lists the capability but would be nice to see a little demo.
Among the many things, it sounds like it creates depth mattes too but I can’t be sure.
I purchased Digieffects Depth but can’t get any replies from them on how to use the product.
So, look for a demo on Freeform Pro and if anyone knows about Depth, appreciate it.

June 7, 2011 at 7:54 pmThanks Ted,
I had already found and looked at your fine tutorials and reviews. 🙂 That was the main reason I am buying it. lol
I think a good tutorial to see would be something that focuses on how it is improved from the original, specifically in really showing some 3D morphing of some sort.
I saw on youtube and the mettle site, a little snippet showing numbers taking on new shape, etc (I’m sure you know the one), believe it goes from a 4 to a 5.
Just something to really show off some 3D stuff.
Thanks,

June 7, 2011 at 8:06 pmInteresting tutorial idea- I’ll give it a shot once I am finished with the Aqua Pack and the last part of the tunnel tutorial.
As far as improvements from the base version:
Only the Generator would be a major improvement, but you get Material controls, a much more refined displacement mapping, Reflection mapping, Depth map and finer controls over 3d distortion. AND it’s much faster!Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

One additional comment, question and I will be out of your hair. 🙂
Visualize, if you will looking out over a lake from the bank. I am thinking of trying to create a draining effect (I guess like a toilet), where out in the middle of the lake, as if the plug is pulled beneath and the water begins to flow down through a hole. I envision it more localized like the water is going down a drain, not so much that the whole water level is lowering. So, if I froze the frame part way through, the water would appear to be bent downward.
Like the parting of the red sea but circular looking. If that makes sense.

June 7, 2011 at 8:26 pmYou can get pretty good water surface using all the new features of FF Pro. The trick for the “drain hole” is to work out a displacement map that can animate a rotating “Milky Way” type spiral shape that gets darker towards the center. Playing with the transition between black and white (gray values) is key- the smoother it is the better. So working at 32bit color depth will help.
You can also try to animate a point on the grid that goes down in 3d space and thus creates a distortion in the plane.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

It would be nice if it fits in to something you are already doing. What is this Aqua pack anyway?
By the way, I’m just toying with the regular freeform. I was trying to apply it to my “lake” and turn the view sideways to sort of pull the mesh backward in to z space. It seems hard to grab the point you want to pull back.

June 8, 2011 at 2:18 amTudor’s “Aqua Pack” is really neat. It literally turns FreeForm Pro into another plug-in – kinda like Psunami. See: https://reels.creativecow.net/film/freeform-pro-the-aqua-pack
FreeFormPro does things that you just cannot do with other AE plug-ins. – ultimately you should really try it for your self. E-mail me with a demo request and I will set you up.Please mention if you are on Win or Mac and keep in mind that we support GPU’s with 512 mb of VRAM but highly recommend you use a GPU with 1 GB of VRAM or higher.

The Freeform Pro demo is incredible and I intend to buy it real quick. Seeing the special of 30% off that shows right now is a great way of enticing me. 🙂 Shows at $209 from $299 right now!
Also, the render engine advertised is incredible. I tried the benchmark test and it came in a 1min 26 seconds for 300 frames where the comparable project with the previous free form was well over an hour! In fact after an estimate of an hour and half and only 1 % afer a few minutes, I had to stop just to get back to some fun stuff.
Excellent!
Appreciate all of your help as well. Now, THAT’s customer service.
