    Hey there I’ve been messing around with the Shatter effect on a concrete bg. I can’t seem to get it to simply crack though. I’ve tried dropping gravity to zero, time freezing it, keyframing the forces etc. Any help would be mucho appreciated!

    pre-comping and time remapping (which it sounds like you may have done) would work, however if you wanted to have the pieces hold in time as a camera moved around for a bullet-time-like effect, then you could try using hold keyframes on the viscosity property and crank up the viscosity.

    if you were using shatter to extrude text — since your later post is about extruded text — then you might check out roland’s old tutorial using shatter:
