I’ve created a simple composition that uses a 3d solid layer and a point light to create a soft vignette appearance. Everything looks okay when exported to lossless QuickTime, but when I sent it to the video guy he said that after compressing there was bad banding, and I had to remove the light completely (everything looks flat and boring now.)

Is there a trick in AfterEffects to create soft lighting with minimal compression banding?

Work in 16 or 32 bit and render a sequence of files tga @ 32bit or uncompressed tiff.
Sometimes it helps to add grain.

Search the AE forum for “banding” and you’ll find tons of threads with tips … most of which center around upping the color resolution, adding grain and/or adjusting individual color channels.
