  • Bing taking over search on Mac; then Chrome opens automatically after closing

Posted by Rob Garver on April 1, 2019 at 9:41 pm

I think I acquired some kind of malware in Chrome on my Mac, but not sure. A couple of days ago I noticed the search engine Bing had taken over. I went to settings and set Google as the default search engine, but it still goes to Bing (which I do not like), even when I search from the Google home page. I have a late 2014 iMac running El Capitan.

The second issue which seems to be connected (since they appeared at the same time), is that when I close Chrome it happens a second later, automatically, by itself. So I can’t even drag the app to the Trash. Help!

Should I trash the whole Chrome app and reinstall?

Any idea how I can solve this?

    Thanks so much. – Rob

Sounds very suspicious. I would get a copy of AppCleaner and drop Chrome onto it. If you just drag Chrome to the Trash, it will only delete the app and not the metadata that is stored in your ~/Library folder. AppCleaner will usually find all the other property files that an app creates and allow you to remove them as well. Then reinstall Chrome and see if it behaves any different. You might want to export your bookmarks before doing this so that you can import them again because AppCleaner will probably remove any personal preferences like bookmarks. Good Luck!

I think you have a virus, yes you have to delete the chrome browser and re install it. But there are chances that even by doing that your problem might not get fixed. Do it first and see if it solves or not. If the virus has got into your system then whatever browser you choose you will be facing the same problem.
