    Hi,
I am trying to run some maintenance and repairs on a Mac Pro, OS X 4.11
and I am unable to convince the machine that it needs to boot up from the install cd so I can run disc utility. I am holding the “C” key during startup and It just hangs on the grey start up screen.
    Any suggestions?

[Laura Gruszczynski] “I am holding the “C” key during startup”

To the best of my knowledge the C key only woks on old PPC Macs.

    Hold down the option key.

I tried that too, with an Apple tech person on the phone. No luck.
Looks like my machine needs service.
    Thanks for your help.

With the CD in the drive go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and set it to start from the DVD.

Then when you are done with your maintainance restart the system and while booting up hold down your eject key and it should eject the DVD before it boots from it and then boot from the hard drive.
