After recently making the jump from Windows to OSX I am very pleased with all things MAC, except for not being able to view & edit video files from a new SD Card based camcorder that I have just purchased (Panasonic SDR-S100). The files are saved in Mpeg2 format and I have seen the ‘QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component’ but the reviews make it sound like a very poor beta version and not likely to work. Does anyone know of a good piece of software that will enable me to work with mpeg2 files on my great new i-Mac ? ? ?

    Thanks in advance !

As far as I know, the Quicktime playback component works just fine, but it’s mainly for viewing. If you want to edit it your best bet is to convert the files to DV files and then edit those in iMovie.

That’s an extra step but it’s probably for the best. MPEG is a poor format for editing with even if you DO find something that will let you do it.

    Download this free program:

It should be able to open your files and it’ll let you export them as just about anything you want. I suggest making a DV quicktime file with it and then editing those files.

For just viewing MPEG2 files, try VLC (VideoLan Client), available at http://www.videolan.org
