OSX crashed twice in 2 days…. advice pls.
Hi
My G5 2.5 with 2.5 gig of RAM has crashed twice in the last 2 days. It’s never crashed before and I’m a little concerned about it.
I’ve not installed any new software (although I have added a new firewire drive) so is there anything I can run (aprt from disk utliity) that will help me to diagnose the problem.The firewire drive is one of 4 external drives I have, I also have 2 internal drives and an external dvd burner. Sometimes only 5 of the 6 drives I have mount and even disk utility can’t find the 6th. The drive it does not find seems to be random BUT it is always one of the firewire drives. Any ideas on this as well?

What exactly do you mean “crashed”
What exactily is it doing or not doing.
Cant even guess as to what is causing it (Software or Hardware) untell you tell us what it exactily happins when it “crashed”

HI there.. Sorry I was rushing and did not explain properly.
The crash is the link windows ‘blue screen of death’. The one where OSX dulls and a polite box comes up telling you that you need to restart you machine. Is this a kernal panic?
At the time I think I was using Safari and Mail. Itunes , skype and adium may have also been running.
It’s normally fine with this going.It did the same thing last night as well. Same crash but I was using the Shake demo at the time.
If I need to provide any more info please let me know what you need.Either my signature of my profile contains info on my machine.

do you have any 3rd party ram in the computer

2 gig of my 2.5 gig is third party. It was purchased from Cricial if that’s any help.

it is posible that the 3rd party ram is causing the problem you could try taking it out and see if the issue persists.
you might just want to take it into the apple store though

I’m working out of the office at the moment so I’ll check that when I get in on Friday.
Is third party RAM more likely to suddenly fail?
Is there an app I can run to check the stability of the ram modules?Thanks Again

fore someone to compleetly trouble shoot your computer through a forum would take weeks mabie months. I sujested 3rd party ram because that is where I always start my trouble shooting.
Please take your computer to a Apple Store there techs are trained and certifid in figuring out and fixing these sort of problems.
Kernil panics can be caused by a verity of differint things and to trouble shoot it threough a forum is just impracticle

Thanks for the suggestion.
I’ve actually discovered a possible problem with my new FW drive which I’ve posted on the G-tech forum. Maybe that IS causing the problem. Not heard of a FW drive causing kernel panics before but who knows. I’m sorting out the FW drive problem at the moment and will also try removing the 3rd party RAM as and when the problem re-occurs.
Thanks again for all of the suggestions. I don’t post much on the cow as I rarely have a problem that I can’t find by searching or by reading the recent posts… but when I do post (and I have posted a few times this week with various issues) I always get a great response from you guys.
