setting default applications
hey there
where can I set up which are the default applications to open certain file types. Since installing After Effects 7, every file is now trying to be opened by after effects.

I’ve tried right clicking on the app icon in the applications folder and there isn’t an option to set as default…can you be a little more specific as to where i need to look

ya…sorry – i guess my steps were cryptic…
1. either right-click or go to the file menu
2. choose “get info”(then go from there)

yes I am familiar with the get info window…it’s just that I cant find a drop down menu or check box that has anything to do with setting up a default option

hey curtis
here is what I’ve found so far….when i bring up the get info window for individual QT files there is an “open with” drop down…this is currently set to AE 7
i can select another app such as FCP or QT and then click the change all button to i assume make a global change to all similar files. the problem is that when i select a new app as the default and then click the change all button – nothing happens…if i close the window and then reopen it AE 7 is back as the default option….any ideas??

Have you done a Permissions Repair recently or ever? (Disk Utility>select volume, Repair Disk Permissions).
In the Get Info window, after selecting a new Default app using the pulldown and clicking the Change All button, have you tried either logging out and back in, or restarting?

The “change all” button in the “Get Info” window is exactly what you use to change the default application.

hey there guys
I’ve been away for a few days and have only just got back. the problem I am having is that the “change all” ie default button – is having no effect. it seems that AE 7 has taken over my machine!!
i routinely repair permissions and have restarted several times to no avail. I have unistalled and reinstalled AE7 and am having the same issues.
This is really puzzling

now something strange. AE7 is now no longer the default to open movies…that has now become quicktime, this after changing default in the get info window (for some reason this time it worked)
but now other files such as installers and word documents will not launch as no application has been set as the default. this is easy enough to rectify with word docs etc… but what app do i need to select in order for installers to launch?
