  • Updating my old IMAC to OS X….HELP!

Posted by Emy Fehmi on September 9, 2006 at 6:30 pm

I’ve got this old IMAC with (omigod) OS8 on it…if you can believe it.

I want to erase it and start fresh with OS X , but the system won’t acknowledge my OSX start up disc…. Drive does work though…

    I don’t have the OS8 startup disc either….

Is there anything i can do? with out the original disc to erase everything?

    thanks!

Have you tried restarting the computer with the disc in it while holding the “C” key?

If the disc loads, use its tools to erase the hard drive before you continue with the installation.

    Yeah I tried that!

It won’t start from that disc, or even see the disc at all on the desktop….

How old an iMac, which version?
If it doesn’t have FireWire, I don’t believe you’ll get anywhere.
Depending on age, a firmware update may be necessary before proceeding.
Is the OS X CD (OS X 10.?.?, just curious) a retail box, or one that came with another machine (which generally won’t work)?

An iMac with tray loading optical slot. It does not have firewire.
I was trying to load Panther or Tiger.

[emy fehmi] “An iMac with tray loading optical slot. It does not have firewire.”

System Requirements for Panther and Tiger on G3 iMacs specify slot-load optical drive and built-in FireWire.
