Issues with the 7D when lip syncing 30fps played back at 24fps
Hello. I’m shooting a short film soon that requires the action of one scene to be at 30fps, but the dialogue has to be a normal speed. I own a Canon 7D and am trying to figure out how I could accomplish this. I assumed I would be speeding up the pre-recorded dialogue to play it back while shooting, film the action at 30fps (shutter 60) and then bring it down to 24fps in FCP. So, theoretically all the data from 30 fps will be there, but it will look like it’s in slight slow motion and the actors lips will sync up to the audio when played at normal speed. I did a quick test with this, but the video was a little jittery and I was having trouble syncing the audio. I was wondering if anyone has done this before or has any suggestions. How fast would you speed the audio up for the shoot and what percentage would you slow down the 30fps footage to match 24 in the FCP timeline? Thanks!

Final Cut Pro isn’t cut out for this type of conversion. Try Compressor.
In the video settings tab, select the codec (ProRes I hope) and change the frame rate to custom/23.976.
Select the audio tab and output LInear PCM 48khz 16 bit.
In the Frame Controls tab at the bottom select Rate Conversion/Best.
Click the very bottom button that says, “so source frames play at 23.976”
Output at 100% of source and yer good to go.
