Im Looking to buy a_______? xl2 vs gl2
I am looking to get a professional camera on a budget. I have narrowed it down to either xl2 or gl2. Which is better? I’m going to be using it for all kinds of things from mountain biking, skiing/snowboarding, wake boarding etc., and the main reason a wedding and family trips(if you talk to my wife that is lol:)). Needless to say its gonna be packed around a lot. Which one is lighter? I would like to be able to take some still shots too, and I understand that the gl2 does but does the xl2? Its not necessary to take stills though it would be neat. Which one has longer battery life? Hi Randall, I have the Canon XL2. For what you are describing, I would recommend the GL2 over the XL2. The XL2 is just a larger, bulkier camera that will be harder for you to pack around. I think there is some weird feature where you can “capture” a picture with the XL2, but I’ve never used it, and I could be wrong.
In the heyday of Standard Definition, both of these were great cameras. However, I think for your purposes and the money you’re willing to spend, you’d be a lot happier with a newer HD tapeless camera… something that shoots on to SD cards. You’ll get great image quality, and the tapeless workflow is so much nicer that logging and capturing Mini DV footage. It is nice to have tapes as a backup, but the ease of a tapeless workflow far out weighs this in my opinion. There’s many tapeless HD cameras to choose from out there that are cheaper than the XL2 or GL2.

Don’t buy an SD camera, there’s just no point anymore. I’ve used very high end HD cameras and some lower end “prosumer” HD cameras (like the HVX200, etc), and I’ve seen footage from the handycam HD $1000’ish range cameras, and really, it’s pretty good. And I think they come w/ plenty of features and settings and ways to adjust your picture, so it’s not just like using a FlipHD w/ no manual settings at all.
It sounds like you’re a Canon guy. Do some research and you’ll find a handful of very decent small HD cameras for the same price range of the XL2/GL2.

Well after much debate I have narrowed it down to two. Although I want to go canon, but there HD camcorders are a little out of reach for me. Which one do you think is better?

I really would rather stick with canon, so I have some saving to do. I think I’m gonna go with a https://www.onequality.com/canon-xha1-hd-professional-camcorder-2-year-warranty-p-197.html, think that will work? I don’t have much more time, but its not that much more. And then I get to stick with canon at least. The other ones may work, but I know you get what you pay for, so I am going for the best I can afford.
