I read that I can use regular 60 minute Sony minDV tapes in my new Canon XH-A1s camera to shoot HDV. If that’s the case, will I still get 60 minutes worth of shooting time if shooting in HDV mode?

Yes, it will still be approximately 60 minutes with either DV or HDV.

HDV runs at almost the same bitrate as standard def DV; it is just MUCH more compressed.

Just for a second opinion, there is really no issue using DV tapes in a HDV camera. One thing to consider is they don’t hold up when re-used.
