    Hi,
Is there a possibility to mask a layer based on a depth-map. Let me explain: I created a simple circular camera-move around a cluster of spheres in C4D, I rendered the animation out including 3D data and depth-map.

Now I want to add some animated text-layers in front of some of the spheres(actually the camera stops at these spheres for a second, and then continues..), and let it disapear behind other spheres as soon as the camera moves away from it and other spheres obscure this text…

I rather not animate all those masks seperately by hand, because there are about 50 spheres in my scene, and of those 50 spheres, 12 got text hovering around it..

I hope this question is clear 🙂

    and thanx in advance!!!

    Mike

Here’s a suggestion: how about rendering separate depth passes, recompositing them as necessary in a precomp, applying, adjusting, and maybe animating Threshold or Levels to the depth pass precomp, and using that as an luma matte for your text?
