How do I fill a shape with a ‘pouring ink’ colour in AE7?
Hi guys,
I’d like to create an animated logo that shows colour ‘pouring’ into an object using After Effects 7.0.
I’ve seen a similar idea in the Coca-Cola ads – at the end of some of the animated ads for Coke, a plain red or white colour pours onscreen and takes the shape of a Coke bottle. I’ve been trying to find these ads online but I haven’t had any success, so I’m appealing to people who might have seen them.
It’s all 2D stuff and I’m essentially just looking for a red fill to flow into a rectangular shape. Would anyone know of an online tutorial for this or how I could possibly go about it? Is it a big job?

This is a simple one, although not intuitive – it involves using your shape you want to fill as the matte for the colored layer, then using a wipe transition, going from bottom to top, to “fill” the shape. You’re going to have two layers for this – the shape layer, which will lend its’ alpha channel to the color layer (second layer). The wipe transition will be placed on the color layer, and you can adjust the speed of the “fill”, as well as the color of the layer, without having to go back to square one. If you want a little turbulence in the “liquid”, you could use one of the distort modifiers to achieve that, so that the liquid seems to be moving as it hits the edges of the container shape. Thanks Joseph! That actually DOES sound relatively easier than I expected. I’m pretty amateurish with After Effects so it’ll take me a bit of time to figure out ‘wipe transitions’, but you seem to know exactly what I’m talking about (the splashes against the side of the container that you mentioned are spot on), so hopefully I’ll figure it out quickly enough. Thanks for your help!
As an aside to this, I looked at Andrew Kramer’s ‘Riot Gear’ Video Copilot tutorials and they seem quite similar to what I’m looking for too, so I might try to explore every opportunity.

Sorry, Keith, I assumed you knew about Transitions – they’re just a category in the AE plugins. If you just use a “Linear Wipe”, you should be good to go.
