Burning a Dual Layer DVD
Hello,
I’m in the final phases of authoring an intricate DVD, which due to the sheer amount of data it holds must be dual layer. This is to be an instructional and set-up disc, which will accompany a tangible product.
Further, this is a start-up product; my initial goal is to achieve placement with a few re-sellers by sending out a handful of “beta” DL-DVDs to interested prospects for review. Due to start-up budget constraints and the strong probability of changes to the DVD before wide release, I’d prefer not to invest the approximate $1500.00 on a replication run right now.
I am using DVD Architect 5.2 for this task; I’ve been compiling and burning iterations of the project for testing as the build develops. The burned discs have thus far worked fine on newer DVD players, including portables; however the same discs have exhibited issues on somewhat older devices, i.e. 5-6 years old.
Short of the obvious (biting the $1500.00 bullet), are there any recommendations for maximizing compatibility in terms of method, e.g. compile in DVDA and use ImgBurn to set the break point and burning, etc. – just to get up and running?
Any expert advice is tremendously appreciated.
PS – When it is time to go to replication, any advice for this same project would be equally appreciated.

Haven’t done much DVD authoring in quite a while, but back when it was our main delivery media, I remember that most player incompatibility problems were due to the brand of media. Where we’d have a compatibility problem on one player, simply burning to a different brand of disc would take care of it, but possibly result in incompatibility elsewhere.
It got to the point that we created a standard waiver advising a client to use replication rather than duplication, and that failing to do so released us from liability of any player incompatibility claims.

In addition to what Mr. Brame said, I would recommend not using dual layer DVDs at all. No matter what brand disc you use to burn, dual layer discs have compatibility issues on a lot of players. You are far better off splitting your project onto two discs. Even if you are replicating, dual layers can be an issue.
