DVD Burn Speed Question
Could someone please explain or point me in the right direction for what exactly Burn Speed means?
My DVD burner broke and I need to purchase a new one. I am wondering what 6x/8x/20x etc means? And is burning at one speed better (not just quicker) than burner at another? -

Burn Speed is of course the speed at which the data is burned to the disc. Burning at a faster speed will take less time to burn the same amount of data. The faster you burn, usually the more errors occur on the disc, creating skipping problems. Regardless of what speed your burner or media supports, I recommend burning no faster than 4X for a reliable data transfer.

Very informative. Thank you. One more question, is it better to buy 8x or 16x blank media. Does that generally make a difference or not?

is it better to buy Verbatim media and write 4x (DVD) or 24x (CD) or 2x (BD)

If both discs are the same brand, I would think the 16x media would be better quality than the 8x, but this is just a guess.

As for mastering (not duplication) I have been using 8x Maxell DVD-Rs Plus Series for years and burning full speed and have zero problems with them playing back in players and being used as pre-Masters.
I would buy the fastest drives and then throttle back the burn with disc speed or burn in Toast (I always burn in DVDSP and like I’ve said I get as close to 100% playable as one could hope for)
