  Authoring DVD… should I use Bottom Field First or Progressive?

  Hi All,

  I’m writing MPeg-2 files to Author a DVD, and I’m using Compressor.
  My input is a Quicktime movie Uncompressed 4:2:2, 1920x1080p.

  In compressor, for the Format, should I choose Automatic / Bottom Field First / Progressive?

  The DVD will be viewed on TV’s at home. So I guess, my question is, are most TV’s now-a-days Progressive or Interlaced?

  If source video is Progressive you can set bottom or top.

  “Progressive” flag is not DVD-VIDEO standart

  CRT based TVs are interlaced (some have a progressive/deinterlacing option)
  Plasma & LCDs are progressive.

  As such if you encode to progressive it will look great on the Plasma/LCDs but possibly jerky on the CRTs, if you encode to interlaced there’ll be a slight drop in quality on both types of TV.

  If it were down to me, I’d encode to progressive as most people I know use a Plasma and pretty well all modern DVD players have progressive support (I’m in the UK so you mileage may vary)
