  You want to make an animation like this…where do you start?

  I would guess you draw each individual shape/object in illustrator and composite this as 3D objects in After Effects. I imagine theres a larger process here, that I’m missing but I’m curious all the same.

  C’mon experts, talk me through how you would achieve this sort of animation.

  I think you answered it yourself- pretty straight forward 2.5D animation. That is 2d artwork, some animated, laid out in 3D space, with camera moves and some effects.
