The shift to CMOS
I need someone to school me here.
For the past …. oh …. 4-5 years there has been a significant shift to CMOS ….. Give me the list of reasons for this please someone. I know some already … power efficiency etc etc …. but after seeing an F35 on ebay for 12000 the other day. I, LIKE ALOT OF OTHER PEOPLE, am thinking this whole thing over in depth. F35 CCD based camera, no rolling shutter issues, 14 stops (alexa equivalent) 444 output. Hollywood workhorse , now being thrown away for 12k. Well not thrown away it still is 12 k.
What are all if not most of the reasons for the shift to CMOS ?
It seems to be the prices are climbing with less functionality in some cases.

Dalsa’s founder actually helped develop both technologies and this is a very in-depth article. I think you’ll find the reasoning for the choices come down to both economical and engineering reasons beyond rolling shutter.
From another Dalsa paper comes the quote “Cost is often more strongly influenced by the business economics… rather than the choice of technology itself.”
Another thing to point to is that CMOS may have superior Signal-To-Noise ratios than larger CCD sensors (thanks in part to their on-chip noise reduction)
