    Dear superheroes,

I’ve always come across reels that ‘took out’ the background in a footage & replaced with a beautiful scenery. I’m jus wondering if AE can acheive that magic or…? Any suggestion would be beautiful.

an example: https://www.graymatterfx.com/ (check out Features>Lords of Dogtown)

    Thanks in advance..
    Good luck to everyone!

Yes. Basically you need to generate a matte. The matte defines what is used in an image and what is seen through the image.

There are many ways to generate a matte. The most obvious and common are:

    1. If the subject is in front of a keyable background. This can be any color that is distinctly different enough from the subject that can be exploited to isolate the intended part of the image. The most common being a greenscreen or blue screen.

    2. “Rotoscoping”. Which is another word for using articulated and interpolated masks to isolate the image by hand but computer assisted. Roto is used only when using color keys, luma keys, or isolating areas with levels is out of the question.

However, any good matte is almost always generated with a combination of these tricks. Also with multiple keyers for different parts of the image.

Using AE you could rotoscope out some backgrounds and add in some footage of another background. Using AE you could also adjust the color properties of the footage to have them match toghether better. But if the camera was to move in any of your shorts you would have to use some form of motion control rig so the cmaera move is the same in both scenes, and if the intended background was a 3d render you would have to somehow use a matchmoving app to extrapolate the camera move and apply it to your 3d scene. In summary, AE is somewhat capable of doing very basic “background changing” but for it to be even remotely as good as that in the lords of dogtown link you would need other software besides AE, a bigger budget, and a lot of experience in the visual effects industry. Thats just my 2 cents and I don’t know much about the visual effects industry/process so I might be wrong.

If you watch those vids you will see that the change outs were how they did the modeling. It shows the removal of the original background, then the wireframe model used to replace it, then the texturing then the final render in the shots where guy is skateboarding and where someone throws something at them off the wharf. I think they use a mixture of rotoscoping/painting and 3D compositing to do this.
