  Best workflow for 4K footage to be output at 1920X1080

  Hi all.

  Working on a MC V8.9.1…

  I’m working on a project where the footage was all shot 4K (4096×2160), but the project will be output at 1920X1080.
  I’m wondering if it is best to create 2 separate projects? One at the 4K resolution and the other at the HD resolution. Or just start the project and ingest at 1920×1080?

  So my options are…
  A. Ingest into the 4K project at 4K res, but then copy those bins into the HD project to work with them there.
  B. Ingest the 4K files into the HD project? Seems I can still use frame flex to adjust the scaling of the clip and I don’t think I see any resolution loss.

  I’ve worked on a few projects with these same conditions and seems to work out fine either way. But it simplifies things to just ingest into the HD project.

  Am I missing something? Does option B seem workable? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

  Are you importing or linking when working with the 4K footage in the 1080 project?

  Hi Michael. Thanks for the post.

  I am linking through the source browser, then consolidating into the Avid so our client can view full-res clips in the edit session. For example, the source clips are XAVC 4K intra VBR Class 300 – 4096X2160, and after consolidating into the Avid, they remain the same on both fronts.

  OK – so FrameFlex by default will scale to fit project type (1080) that you can now use to punch in a reframe as needed up 1920×1080 of the original 4K (4x). Are you not seeing that?

  Yes, I’m seeing that. I just wanted to confirm that there is not something I’m not seeing (or not thinking of), or maybe some hidden setting somewhere before spending several days ingesting.

  It all seems to work just fine the way I’m planning on doing it, but thought it would be best to confirm with an expert. Thanks!
