  • Importing Clips – MXF Names Truncated

Posted by Reuben Fink on March 3, 2014 at 5:27 pm

I received footage with naming conventions that had up to 40 characters. ie..

    (projectname_card01_CamB_022814_P1020018.mov)

The unique clip ID was at the end of the name. When importing as MXFs the names became truncated removing the ID which makes it impossible to find the original source file if the clip were to get corrupted since I change the original names in MC. Is there a way to keep MC from renaming or is my only option to shorten the names of the original files?

    Thanks.

I have brought this up with Avid several times that the TAPE field truncates at 32 depending on how that information comes in (ALE, EDL import, etc.). I have not seen the issue with AAF import, but certainly merging anything into that from ALE will not work. These long file names are becoming more common with cameras from BMD, or VFX workflows that have versioning. This is something Avid needs to address, but in the meantime you may want to track longer filenames in both a Camroll, Labroll or custom column to not lose it.
