  Looking into an HD DSLR for use with MC – Recommendations?

  Hi All,

  I’m looking into buying a new HD camera and I’m thinking about going the DSLR route. I’ve done some research into the Canon 5d MkIII, the Nikon D800 and the Sony A99. If anyone has any advice or experiences to share on these, I’d appreciate it.

  They can all be imported into Avid via AMA. Just make sure to transcode before you start editing. And you might want to look into QTChange, so you an assign unique timecode to the footage:

  (Hey, I’m an editor, not a shooter. I have a Canon 550D that I use to shoot stills and video of the family).

  I was surprised to find that the Panasonic GH3— while not one of the Canon or Sony “big boys”–has features that video shooters value, such as
  –no 12 minute or 29 minute time limit ( it records about two hours to SD),
  –has time code, about 72MB/s data stream,
  –clean hdmi,
  –rotating live view screen, etc.

  It is a MFT (four-thirds) sensor but now that Metabones Speed Booster adapters allow full frame lenses, add a stop and slightly improve resolution at the center, it can approximate a Super 35 setup.

  Very interesting.

  Shane and Warren, Im glad you’ve discovered you’re in the same county and thanks for the confirmation on the 5d Mk III and MC workflow.

  Mike, thanks for the word on the Panasonic. They make great equipment, but I’m looking for full frame and would prefer to skip the adapter route for this.

  I’ve been spending too much time at B&H’s online Canon section, so today may be the day.

  I really like my D800. And the new Nikon lenses are SHARP.

  And of course you get a 36MP still camera in the bargain. As you may know, the D800 writes Quicktime files to the CF or SD card. The Blackmagic Shuttle will let you get uncompressed 422 out of the clean HDMI with no 20 minute limit. I have done streaming test with my D800 running for hours at a time, with only short pauses to change the battery about every two hours.

  Did you buy the Canon?
