UNC data, path names into EDL?
Hi folks,
I am researching ways of extracting archived data from LTO for a grade. The ArriRAW filenames are there in the Avid, having come in via metadata during the offline within DNxHD files. However, I’m damned if I can get this UNC info out of the Avid in an EDL or otherwise. I’d love it to appear as comments in the EDL. Each entry is a long path of image sequence filenames.
‘Duplicate UNC Column to…’ does not appear to work. This could be as I do not have the material linked on my Avid, only an ’empty’ project file from editorial.
Text from the bin does not really help, as the shots are not trimmed as to their cut durations.
Any ideas? I realise this is a very niche question!

I would look to the XML export from FilmScribe using the SCAN list setting. It dumps all source metadata columns for each event. Look for the UNC tag in the XML. Schema can be found here:

Wow that’s a very powerful tool. Thanks for the suggestion, I will be sure to investigate it’s potential across many of my DI projects.
I’ve made a scan list with the ArriRAW data, by copying from the UNC coumn to the UNCPath column, which can be displayed nicely. The info looks great in preview as an HTML page, however I can’t save the XML. No option, Save As in Filmscrive is greyed out, even after being Previewed. Could this be because my media is offline (they are cutting in LA, I am in London)? Or am I missing a trick? So close!

With FilmScribe launched, click the Global button in the main area and the right side of the app changes for settings associated with that. At the top right is a list of templates, click there and the last one on the list is XML. When generating a list, the preview window will show you the XML, just do a SAVE AS from there with name and .xml.
You might get away with a simple TAB file as well, but there you need to enter the name of the Column you are looking to add to the file if it is is not part of standard column list available. You will see that when clicking the SCAN button and see options on the right hand side.
The concept behind this was to allow for automation in processes such as the one you are trying to do, but unfortunately the entire solution was never completed and the XML effort was sort of left in limbo. But it still has some value in many of these workflows. One XSL that was developed but for some reason seems to have been lost at Avid is the one that converts the CHANGE LIST XML to a CMX 3600 EDL and was used for change management on the sound stage for Green Lantern. I went looking for that a few weeks back and it is has disappeared from both its availability and Avid corporate memory. Too bad, it was a handy little template.

Following is an example of a single event timeline where the source clip had a few columns of metadata populated. For your interest, check out tags for UNC, Tape, Reel, etc, as well as frame counts and timecode values for different offsets with the AucTX values. They can represent absolute code, production audio, payback, offset corrections, etc. Another feature request would be for Media Composer to allow a user to “tag” those with actual value names rather than just AuxTC1-5.

Hi Michael,
Thanks so much for your detailed instructions. I had totally missed the Global button being how to set these options. It now makes perfect sense. I’ve managed to produce exactly what I was after to pipe into some data management scripts. In the end tabbed lists were easier to deal with than the XML.
Creating an EDL with UNCPath in the comments would be perfect, for the Baselight, but this doesn’t look possible from Avid or Filmscribe at the moment. Do ou think that may be feasible in the future? Is this the feature which you think got lost in the Avid matrix?!
