Best workflow for RED footage on PC Avid Symphony 5
Hello all,
This is my first post on CC and I’m hoping someone can offer advice. I’m trying to figure out the best way to convert RED files to Avid friendly DNxHD files. The production company that I’m dealing with will be delivering RAW RED files and I will be rough cutting in Avid. I want to preserve timecode and cut in DNxHD 145. Our graphics department will be taking our Avid rough cuts and referring back to the RED files to composite with.
Any pointers on workflow and how to go about converting the RED files in an efficient manner?

AMA to access the media. Then TRANSCODE to the format you want.

don’t forget you can use “Set Source Settings” to adjust the Red metadata before you Transcode. But whatever you do test the whole post route first.

If you’re going to go back to the original R3D files, then you might consider DNxHD36 and save some storage. Also, how are you going to finish, in Avid or other application? It’s just there’s a slight difference in source ID management between AMA and making dailies in RedCine X. Either one can work, just be aware of the entire workflow, and as Pat says, test it out.

Thank you all for your input. Truly appreciated. We decided to have the R3D camera assist render out MXF and Pro Res files for us. I’m finishing in Avid. We’ll test out the workflow first.
