23.976p NTSC or 24p NTSC?
Posted by Ryan Santos on September 29, 2011 at 3:51 amI’m using Avid for the first time. In the new project dialogue box, I’m given a choice between two 24p NTSC formats: one is 23.976p NTSC, the other is 24p NTSC? Which one should I use?

September 29, 2011 at 10:38 am23.976. 24 is for true 24fps – and at a SWAG (Silly Wild A Guess), its likely your camera is shooting 23.976.

September 29, 2011 at 12:40 pmIt’s more common to use 23.976 in NTSC land, as that is what most HD cameras shoot.
True 24 fps requires audio speed adjustments when going to/from 29.97 which makes working with it more complicated.

September 29, 2011 at 6:42 pm24.000 is typically used for feature film workflow where film is being shot at 24.000fps and audio is being imported and synced directly in Avid for post. Some studios prefer this as they need to deliver a movie theatrically first and the DCI spec is 24.000 and not 23.976 and they don’t have the time to QC all the stems for foreign and domestic when there is a sample rate conversion involved.
Television and other video related projects in NTSC based countries will shoot and record at 23.976. Indie films are done at 23.976 and will do a pullup later with SRC for a DCI if needed, but usually they have time to do so – not the big studio films with day and date releases and they are editing and mixing up to the last minute.

September 30, 2011 at 8:45 amIf I’m shooting a 7D or a GH2 at 24p, will they also use the 23.976 settings in Avid?

September 30, 2011 at 11:12 amYes – if you’ve updated the firmware in the last 18 months or so, the camera is doing 23.976 and 29.97.

October 1, 2011 at 3:52 amIs the video coming out of both cameras 23.976 out of 29.97 (NTSC) stream which means it has pull-down?

October 1, 2011 at 11:44 amDepends on what you mean by coming out? As recorded, or over the HDMI? As recorded, 23.976p and 29.97p are the native frame rates. No pulldown. Unsure about the HDMI, but native for starters I would think.

October 3, 2011 at 2:26 amI don’t believe those camera record with pulldown on the cards. They are all native rates –

October 3, 2011 at 2:58 amSo is it correct to say that both cameras are not NTSC because if they are, they would have pulldowns to make them 29.97 on the actual frame rate (when shooting 24P)?
24p from a Panasonic DVX100 is actually 29.97 because it has pulldown and 24p from the DSLRs are real 24 frames per second. Am I understanding this correctly?
