    Hello internet,

Here’s the deal. When importing a DV AVI into avid, for whatever reason the quality is terrible. But I went ahead and cut with it anyway, thinking it would be easy to replace with something higher quality later on. So far, my efforts have been fruitless.

I couldn’t get Avid to import the avi in any way that made it look decent. Linking the original file as an AMA looks great, however. I even did a mixdown of the file – so now I’ve got two MXFs in my media folder with the same timecode, same source, same everything. If I was using FCP or Premiere, I would just relink the master clip to this new file – but the auto-relink that Avid binds us to refuses to link this old master clip with the new, shiny file.

Is there any way to point a master clip to a specific mxf? Or another solution to my problem? Thanks,

Select the new clip, then right click on sequence, choose relink and choose “relink to selected in all open bins”. If the TC matches, you might be in luck, but as one was brought in via AMA and one was imported I’m not entirely sure.

In your scenario, the relink to selected should work as both IMPORT and AMA link to out the source file name in the SOUCE FILE column. Hilight all the good looking imports and the sequence and do “relink to selected” in the relink menu.

What I did to solve this was the following – laid down the AMA in a new sequence. Video mixdown. Exported the mix down into a quick time reference file. Reimported. Changed timecode and tape on the new file to match the old master clip.

Basically tricked Avid into doing it for it. Thanks for all the help anyways dudes.
