MX02 on Avid
Posted by Jim Sprague on September 7, 2011 at 12:11 amWe’ve just installed an MX02 Mini Max on our MC 5.0.3 system. I’ve got the video sort of figured, but I can’t get the monitor calibration utility to function the way the manual says it should. And I don’t have the ability to export Max h.264 files. Do I need to upgrade to 5.5 to get this functionality? It’s really hard to find documention on having an MX02 on 5.0.3

What happens when you try, other than it doesn’t function? There are a LOT of steps, admittedly, but I have gotten it to work.
[Jim Sprague] “And I don’t have the ability to export Max h.264 files.”
You need to choose SEND TO QT, and then in the FORMAT area, choose not H.264, but MAX H.264. Do that?
[Jim Sprague] “Do I need to upgrade to 5.5 to get this functionality?”
Nope, I used it all the time under 5.0.3.

September 7, 2011 at 5:22 pmWhen I open the “Matrox HDMI Calibration Utility”, I get a very simple window with 4 sliders and 6 buttons- “OK/Cancel”, “Save as Default/Load Default”, “Load Factory Default”, “Load Graphic”, and a “blue only” check box. There is no way that I can see of saving or loading a configuration other than as a default. In the video output window there should be a “RGB Calibrated” option in the YUV/RGB dropdown. I don’t have that either.
As for the send to h.264, whether I select “Export” or “Send to QT Movie”, I still end up at the “Export Settings” window. When I click “Format Options”, MAX h.264 is not in the list.
also, when I looked for information on the Avid website, I found this in the MX02 Mini FAQ
“What is the difference between the Matrox MXO2 Mini and the Matrox MXO2 Mini with the MAX option?
The Matrox MXO2 Mini which is approved for use with the Avid Media Composer or Avid NewsCutter systems is a video/audio monitoring device for content creators. When used with Avid editing systems, the Matrox MXO2 Mini is approved strictly as a monitoring device. The Matrox MXO2 Mini with the MAX option accelerates H.264 encoding with Adobe Media Encoder on the Windows and Apple Compressor and Telestream Episode on the Mac.”
This would seem to mean that the MX02 Mini Max won’t do h.264 with Avid MC 5.0.3 Are you sure you’re not running 5.5?

September 7, 2011 at 5:33 pmYou aren’t running the latest MXO2 Drivers. That calibration utility was found to have a fatal flaw…so it was changed.
As for the MAX option, I used it all the time when I was on 5.0.3. Installing the latest drivers might add that option to the SEND TO QT export. I am using 5.5 now, but only since June. I’ve had the MXO Mini on my system since last summer, with 5.0.3

September 7, 2011 at 5:52 pmThanks Shane, I’m talking to Matrox support. Would you recommend 5.5?

September 7, 2011 at 6:10 pmI would. Better AMA, more camera support. But MC6 is on the horizon too. BUT, buy when you need.

September 8, 2011 at 5:22 pmHey Shane,
I left a comment on your blog page, but I’ll leave one here as well. I’m really PI55ED OFF at Avid and Matrox for being so misleading with their advertising. This is from Matrox’s site about the MX02 on Avid on PC.
Avid’s support of Matrox MXO2 Mini was the talk of NAB and IBC 2010, giving Media Composer users a very inexpensive HD monitoring solution. But that’s not the only benefit Matrox products offer Avid users. Matrox MXO2 Mini with the built-in MAX H.264 encoding accelerator option lets you deliver H.264 files for the web, mobile devices, and Blu-ray at speeds up to five times faster than software alone, without sacrificing quality.
here’s the page to look at. Only when you get to the chart at the bottom do you see that it doesn’t work on PC.
https://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/pc/mxo2_family/mxo2_mini/for_avid/
So for anybody that’s considering one of these, be aware that it doesn’t work on your Avid PC

September 8, 2011 at 5:26 pmI saw that Jim, and I am really sorry about that. I didn’t know about the support (or lack thereof) of the MXO2 on an Avid on a PC. I don’t own a PC, I use a Mac for everything, so I am only aware of Mac support features. I sincerely hope that if my touting the MXO2 in any way swayed your decision to buy it, you accept my apology for not knowing all the facts about the PC support side of things.
It at least works for monitoring though, right?

September 9, 2011 at 12:51 amShane, I absolutely don’t blame you for my purchase, I guess I should have looked harder, but I still think it’s pretty misleading. And yes, it’s great to be able to actually see what we’re cutting on a big screen. Who knows, maybe Avid will add PC compatibility in a patch. Avid, are you listening?
