I am working on a long-form documentary project and a talented young editor wants to work with me. Trouble is that she lives 200 miles away and uses Final Cut, whereas I use AVID exclusively. I am wondering if she might be able to digitize from my HDV tapes, edit scenes on Final Cut, then send me the lists of shots and time codes, which I could then plug into my AVID Media Compose, which would then — voila — create the identical scene in AVID. Is this just a piple dream? Or is there any way to make the two editing systems compatible?

    Thanks,

    Ross

This is a pipe dream. There might be ways to get this to work, if you REALLY work at it, and buy a couple Automatic Duck products, and FCP Reconnect. And really work hard to get things right.

Sorry, they need to get Avid MC. Keep things simple.

What Shane said. You can try to make this work and buy a bunch of 3rd party stuff to do it, or they can spend $1,000 on the Media Composer crossgrade offer, you can send them a drive with your media and original project, then you email bins back and forth and everything automatically relinks. Fast, easy, pretty much bulletproof (just don’t edit via AMA – it’s not bulletproof yet).

Why should you waste your time rebuilding their edit because they want to use different software? Make it easy on yourself – require they use Avid.

True. By the time you buy both versions of Automatic Duck needed to do this…and that would be problematic…you could buy Avid MC 5.5 for $1000.
